While Michelle and the kids were away I took advantage and headed out to Hendon for the day. As luck would have it the RAF Museum there was holding an open day with plenty of period actors around reliving the Blitz.

The museum at Hendon had been on my list of places to visit since we went past the museum back in 2004 when we headed in that direction to collect our BMW. However while walking around the museum a statement by an architect friend was constantly ringing through my ears...while talking about restoring Hinemihi and the Cutty Sark, Ant made the comment that the Cutty Sark was already dead before it went up in flames a few months ago! I couldn't help but think that all these beautiful aircraft on display were themselves dead!

Pictures from the outside static displays.
There were also a number of re-enactments of the Battle of Britain during the day as well.
A fraction of the aircraft in the museums collection!

A Lancaster in the Bomber Command hangar.

I only got around 3/4 of the displays before closing time, such is the vastness of the collection on display at the museum!

The museum itself was excellent, plenty for kids and adults to do (not to mention some rather excellent multimedia displays in the main hall and an excellent short film on the battle of britain in the Battle of Britain hangar.

B17 on display.
