Every year just before Kohanga holds its annual hangi at Hinemihi, Dean Sully and his students from the Institute of Archaeology at UCL carry out a number of maintenance days with the aim of giving Hinemihi a good cleaning before her biggest day of the year. |

Dean had brought a number of photos dating back to just before the Tarawera eruption in 1884. These two were attempts at recreating some of those photos. |

Alan Gallop is what you would consider to be an authority on Hinemihi. During the clean up on the 10th of June he was giving a talk about the history of Hinemihi and while recalling the night of the eruption he stopped, stuttered then suddenly realised that as he was giving his speech, one hundred and twenty three years earlier almost to the hour Tarawera was raining fire and destruction down upon the community that was huddled in Hinemihi for protection! Coincidence? |
