Fort George and Culloden
After spending the morning walking around Urquhart Castle Eimi was really happy to be walking around Fort George and later Culloden :) |
The British built the fort to make sure the Highlands never rose up against British rule again. It also turned out to be the most advanced artillery fort in Europe and is still used today by the Ministry of Defence (maybe to make sure the Highlands don't rise up eh?:) |

The chapel inside Fort George with probably the only bagpipe playing angel lead glass in the world! |
When we arrived we found that the next day was an open day with lots of period style displays and so on. Here a troop practices its drill. |
After Fort George we drove to Culloden and walked around the field where the last battle was fought in Great Britain. |
The National Heritage people have been slowly returning the battle field to its old state when it was a marsh. They are slowly getting there and you get a great feel for what it was like during the battle, especially for the men who made futile charges against the British along this sodden ground! This is the view up towards the British lines. |
The stones commemorate the Clans that fought and fell on the battle field! |
